SEPANG, JUNE 17, 2010: As environmental awareness began to spread over the years and with the advent of technology, car manufacturers have begun to manufacture eco-friendly cars to meet with the demands of the environmentally conscious consumers.
It is only natural that the next step would be an eco-friendly motorsports series.
The Volkswagen Scirocco Cup, staged as a partner series of the DTM, is the world's most eco-conscious manufacturer's cup as it is the first one-make cup to exclusively use bio-compressed natural gas (Bio-CNG) technology.
Compared to other cars which use the conventional fuel, Volkswagen’s Scirocco has a high octane fuel rating, and thus emits 80 per cent less carbon dioxide into the air.
The idea behind the Volkswagen Scirocco Cup was conceived after the 24H Nürburgring race in 2009, where the sports coupe’s performance in the Alternative Fuel Category proved that Bio-CNG powered vehicles is up to racing standards.
This year, for the first time ever, Malaysians can take a closer look at the eco-friendly race as Sepang International Circuit will play host to the second round of the Volkswagen Scirocco Cup China 2010, from June 19-20.
Running as one of the support race to the SuperGT International Series, the Malaysian edition will be the only Scirocco Cup China event held outside of the People’s Republic since its debut at the Shanghai International Circuit last year.
In the first round of the Volkswagen's Scirocco Cup China 2010, held at the Zhuhai International Circuit on May 23, Malaysia’s sole contender, Eric Koh took first place in the Race 2.
Driving car No. 11, the 43-year old racer had initially won the sixth place in Race 1 before blazing his way to take first place in Race 2. Altogether, it was an excellent performance by Koh, considering that it was his debut apppearance.
"This was my first time driving Scirocco. I felt so good. The car limit is very high and yet easy to manipulate, and I am very happy to win the first prize of this round,” said Eric in a press statement.
In the Malaysian edition of the race, Koh will be replaced by fellow Malaysian, Hammond Lai, who will be among the 20 drivers battling for the championship title.
Aside from top Chinese drivers, the Scirocco Cup China 2010 race line-up includes drivers from various parts of the world, such as Italy, Canada, Britain and France.
Tickets for SuperGT are priced at RM100, and parking charges are priced at RM5 for cars and RM2 for bikes (per entry).
