The lead singer of Search, who was introduced as the ambassador of R2 Racing Team, said his services would not just be confined to the promotion of the team; but motorsports as a whole especially for the Malaysian Super Series.

“I hope that through my small contribution here would generate a new interest for motorsports among Malaysians and perhaps, even getting more artists and celebrities to chip in as well for the good of Malaysia’s motorsports,” he said at the ceremony, which was also marked with the official launch of the R2 Racing Team.

A regular in Sepang’s 12-hour Merdeka Millennium Race, R2 Racing Team is making the debut in the Malaysian Super Series with brothers Romie Asmawi Abd Jais and Romie Razin Adilha behind the steering wheels of two 1600cc Honda Civic EK machines for the Supersixteen Championship.

To be run in seven rounds with each of the car and bike competitions running five rounds, the 2008 Malaysian Super Series would kick off this weekend with a combined programme of cars and bikes; pitting the best of Malaysian drivers and riders against top international racers from as far as Australia, Japan and Sri Lanka.

Introduced by Sepang International Circuit as a platform for Malaysian racers to sharpen their skills and to unearth new talents, the Malaysian Super Series is effectively the national championship for track racing; given the participation of the country’s top racers.

While only Deanna Yusof remained as the only top celebrity having competed in the series, the event had attracted a host of artistes with the likes of Fasha Sandha, Dynas, Nora Danish, Linda Rafar, Hans Isaac and many more at the paddock to enjoy the highly entertaining MSS.

“So, I guess you’ll be seeing more of me and my friends at the circuit . You will definitely see me at the race this Sunday and I hope racing fans would also come in droves to catch the race and enjoy the excitement,” said Amy.

The presence of Amy and his friends would definitely add more glamour and prestige to the series, which SIC hoped would help enhanced the popularity of the series and woo in bigger participation among the players and more spectators to the stands.

R2 Racing team director Mohd Zailey Idris said that Amy was selected because of his popularity and his large following and that he had been close to members of R2 Racing Team for a very long time.

“Amy is a close friend and he was truly enthusiastic when he approached him. He likes motorsports and is thrilled to play his role as the team ambassador,” said Zailey, adding that the appointment of Amy was marketing strategy in wooing the sponsors.

Clearly making an impact, R2 Racing Team had drawn sponsorship from Santa Barbara Polo and Racquet Club, Loon Power, No1sticker.com, RRA Builders, Maui Group of Companies, Juta Krystal Enterprise, Sutra ‘Mega Event and Entertainment and X Xtreme Motorsport Garage.

On the team, Zailey said he had full confidence in the capability of the two siblings, adding that the team had set target of podium finish for the opening round this weekend and as front-runners for the overall Supersixteen Championship.

Champion for the last two season, Boy Wong would be seeking to record a hattrick this year for the Supersixteen Championship. Sri Lankan Dilantha Malagamuwa and Australian Brent Odgers would also be challenging for their third overall title in the Supercar and Superbike championships respectively.

Qualifying for all competitions in the opening round would be held this Saturday (April 12) with the two compulsory races to be run on Sunday (April 13).
