Two-times Malaysian Super Series (MSS) champion Dilantha Malagumuwa gave his new ‘out-of-the-box’ Lamborghini LP560 race machine full marks on performance as the Dilango Racing driver made a perfect double win at Round 2 of the Malaysian GT Series in Sepang today.
“I have no complaints on the performance of the car … we will be ready for the actual battle , which is at the Merdeka (Millennium Endurance) Race,” declared Dilantha, whose two wins today pushed him to the top of the point standings in new Malaysian GT Series – the premier car championship at the Malaysian Super Series.
With his closest rivals, Singaporean Mok Weng Sun and Malaysian Tunku Hammam Sulong – opting to skip the round to place full focus on the GT3 Asia Series, Dilantha was the overwhelming favourite to dominate proceedings at the Malaysian GT Series.
“Actually, I spoke again to Weng and Tunku this morning; asking them to join the race; but they said that they would be too tired to do four races in one day. So, it was just me at the Malaysian GT race,” said Dilantha, who clearly wanted to cover as many kilometers as possible in his new race car.
The Lamborghini arrived at the circuit yesterday morning; and was immediately put to the track in free practice and later in qualifying, which Dilantha topped the charts as expected with a time of 2 minutes 9.588 seconds around the 5.543-km track.
“It was a case of the car being reaching here and taken out of the box; and put immediately for competition with zero preparation. All preparation works were done yesterday based on the free practice; and everything worked out well … almost everything,” said Dilantha in reference to the incident in Race 1 for the GT3 Asia Series.
Starting from second on the grid, Dilantha’s million-ringgit Lamborghini was hit twice from behind by Siu Yut Lung; causing it to turn and stopped. Rejoining the race from behind, Dilantha made his way throughout to the leading group and eventually finished the race in fourth place.
It was, however, swiftly repaired for the opening race of the Malaysian GT Series, which Dilantha led from the starting lights to the checkered flag; finishing the 10-lap battle in 22 minutes 46.483 seconds and 1 minute 8.56 seconds ahead of second-placed Joe Sevack.
It was a similar story for Race 2 at ; which saw Sri Lanka’s #1 racing driver taking the checkered flag from start to finish. With his closest rival Joe Sevack out of the race, it was a cruise for Dilantha who completed the 10-lap contest in 25 minutes 26.884 seconds.
An earlier battle at Race 2 in the GT3 Asia Series on a wet track, however, did not went well for Dilantha as his battle with Mok was disrupted by the entry of the safety car. Dilantha was adjudged as overtaking Mok during safety car period and was slapped with a 10-second penalty. In his eagerness to cut for his loss of time, Dilantha slid his Lamborghini into the gravel bed at Turn 9 on Lap 7 and immediately spun after entering the track on his dirty tyres.
While confirming that he would be doing the full championship for the inaugural Malaysian GT Series; Dilantha admitted that his priority would be for the 11th edition of the MMER, which would be held from August 5 to 8.
“Obviously, we would be doing some more tests. But; from the car’s performance this weekend, it would be minimal. We just need to enhance it further,” said Dilantha, who would be partnering Super GT driver Kota Sasaki and a Lamborghini test driver, whom has yet to be decided.
“I feel that we have a good team this year. Having said that, I am made to understand that the competition is even stiffer this year especially with the Audi works team from Europe. But, we Asians are equally good drivers as well,” said Dilantha, who has yet to score a podium win at the MMER.
