Boy Wong On A Double Mission In Malaysian Super Series 2008

Seeking his third Malaysian Super Series (MSS) crown this year, Boy Wong Yew Choong has send out a clear warning to his rivals; declaring that he has set a target of winning the Supersixteen title by the penultimate Round 4 and that he was optimistic of achieving that this season.

Boy, who is also competing in the 2000cc Supersaloon Championship, said his mission this year was to score the double and that one of the titles would need to be win before the final round at the A1GP World Cup of Motorsports in November, where he could only race in either the Supersixteen or the Supersaloon race.

“So, the team decided that we need to secure the Supersixteen title in Round 4 and concentrate fully on the Supersaloon title in Round 5 at the A1GP race. That’s the challenge that the team had thrown to me this season and I accept,” said Boy.

Winner of the Supersixteen Championship title in 2006 and 2007, Boy, who raced under the banner of Type R Racing Team, was second in the Supersaloon Championship last year; losing to Eddie Lew of JC Racing in the battle of the 2000cc machines.

According to Boy, the team would be fielding three cars for each of the two championships with 2006 Supersaloon champion Soh Kee Koon and Type Racing team leader Tek Kean Kang as the other two drivers.

“All three of us would be competing in both championships – Supersixteen and Supersaloon except for the final round. Because, at the A1GP, the two championships run together … so, we need to choose. For me, however, it’s clear – Supersaloon for Round 5 and try winning the Supersixteen in Round 4; just like I did last year,” added Boy.

While he noted that competition in the Supersixteen Championship would be tough with the likes of Harry Chai, Kok Pak Chiang, Chan Sau Wie, Ramesh Subramaniam, Boy, however, was confident about winning the battle of 1600cc machines within the first four rounds.

“Our strongest point would be the power of the cars. Our cars are prepared by Lai Wee Sing of R-Engineering. Ah Lai was the Supersixteen champion in 2004 and 2005 before he shifted to drag racing. The cars are always reliable. I have done it for two years and I know that I can do it again this year,” he said.

Apart from the Supersixteen regulars, Boy would also need to overcome the challenge of debutants MSS Romie Asmawi Abdul Jais and his brother, Romie Razin Adilha of R2 Racing Team, who had declared at a press conference on Tuesday that they did not fear anybody in the Supersixteen Championship and that they are ready to surprise the favourites.

Defending champion Eddie would remain as Boy’s biggest hurdle for his quest for the Supersaloon championship crown; along with the other top names like 2005 champion Eric Yeo, Sharjihan Ghouse and Tengku Hammam.

Last year, Boy was leading the championship; only to lose it in Round 4 to Eddie after he failed to finish one of the two races for the round following an accident. In the final round, Eddie, winner of the Supersixteen title in 2003, maintain his superiority over Boy to add the Supersaloon crown to his collection.

Apart from the Supersixteen and Supercar championships, the series also features the Supercar Championship and the Super 1000 for cars as well as Superbike, Supersports, Kawasaki Cup, 135cc Production Bike and the new Bikers Mag Naza Cup for the bike competitions.

The official free practice and qualifying session for all championships would be held this Saturday (April 12) with the races to be run on Sunday (April 13).

Participated by Malaysia’s top drivers and riders, the Malaysian Super Series is effectively the national championship for track racing and they compete against top international racers coming from as far as Japan, Sri Lanka and Australia.
